Props to pre-8-week-challenge-Kahli, I don’t know how I lifted things without triceps. And all these weird places that I now have muscles popping up – how have I gone through life thinking shoulder muscles were a myth, like unicorns and 4 Year Careers?! (Hashtag Winky-Face!) Don’t even get me started on my new favourite part of my body – the little trench that runs down my spine; it feels so strong and muscular now that it’s not surrounded by flab. Until I saw the before and after photo’s I didn’t realise that most of the results are through my back and arms – an area that has caused me so much grief in the double mirrors of Myer lingerie section!!
On a good day now, I’ll accost friends to “feel my waist!” And once I even wore a midriff top, albeit with a high waisted skirt, but there was a sliver of flat stomach flesh all the same!
I don’t really go by the number on the scales because whenever I have lost cm’s I’ve always stayed the same weight or even put on one or two kg’s. So even though I’m stoked to be down 2kg’s, I’m more stoked to have lost 2cm’s from my butt, 2cm from my waist and 1cm from around my chest (that better have been all back fat!!) And even where there’s been no real number change, the composition has changed from flab to muscle.
Gym and I have always had a love hate thing going on, I considered it a torture chamber of dragging feet and mental screaming, sometimes not just mental. Even in high school I’d sit on the sidelines during Physical Education class, masking my crippling self-consciousness with defiance, saying “I’m being the cheer squad Mr K, I AM participating!” The truth was, I was just too embarrassed about being unfit and didn’t have the energy to make the change.
But through the challenge, I haven’t just restored my energy, now I have too much and exercise is a necessary outlet for it all! After Body Pump, I still have fuel in the tank, so I do Zumba next as well, then I’m still buzzing so I chat to everyone in the change room. I average 1.5 hours, 5 days a week. Compare that to pre-8-week-challenge Kahli who just did halfa on the tready and then ghosted out, 3 days a week. Or to do a proper workout, had to take bad supplements (for legal reasons, I’m joking) (no I’m not) (haha yes I am) (not)…!
I feel like I didn’t really have to try that hard on the challenge, in that all I did was honestly listen and respond to my body’s needs properly. I was especially aware of this because I wanted to test the products as the variable. In fixing my body’s nourishment, I didn’t crave chocolates and lollies as has been my problem for-like-ever. And through eating and drinking alkaline, I’ve started craving fresh vegetables. When I have been tempted to eat junk, I ask myself “what are you really craving? Energy or entertainment?” and then eat to alleviate the cause not band-aid the symptom – or find something stimulating to do if that cause is boredom or habit!
The catalyst for change has been the mindfulness of supplementing and the intense energy it has unlocked. I’ve been on the Go Green set for the 8 weeks: a Probiotic and Repair Ultra every morning upon rising, Super Greens and Berry Blast pre-morning-workout, Digest Ultra and Vitamin with every meal and Fibre at night.
The epic food and exercise fails that happened over 8 weeks should have seen me stack on the weight: Christmas, New Year’s, a disgusting debilitating week-long flu, the discovery of a whole food vegan salted caramel recipe which is astronomically calorie laden, and then 9 full days working promo at the tennis for a lolly company.
But having gone 90% plant based, almost by accident, and getting my body processing food as it is supposed to, the slip up’s haven’t taken a stronghold at all. No longer am I mentally preparing for the return of the kilo’s, as has been the case for every other diet I’ve done, because the lifestyle and energy (and people!!) I’ve found is so gratifying that I know I won’t turn back! So if I demand that you feel my waist in excitement, just go with it! And Mr K, if you’re reading this, I’m no longer hiding in shame on the proverbial sidelines – I’m out there kicking (my own!) butt, front and centre court, and loving every strenuous, sweaty moment!
