9 weeks ago, my best mate came up to me and said that he wanted to do a challenge of some sort, I kind of looked at him and was like you cant be serious, I was happy with my laid back cruisey life style. but that’s just me in a nutshell I’m too laid back and once I’m in my comfort zone I don't really get out and do much more, tend to go through the motions of everyday life and do what I feel comfortable doing. We used to go to gym 5-6 days a week last year and that was good, but we never took it serious to be honest, we would go there lift some weights, talk rubbish and go home and eat whatever we liked, we never took the food side of things serious at all, its not like we would eat crappy foods all the time but from Thursday night to Sunday afternoon it would consist of at least 4 take away meals, ranging from nando's, McDonalds, KFC and Parma’s at the pub as a few examples. Most weekends would consist of going out to the pub, clubs and social events that included having a couple of beers even if we where to be at a mates house watching the footy or something we would have a few beers. It was the life style that I was comfortable with, I knew I wasn’t doing my body any favors but I was enjoying the memories it all created.
It was a long time between gym sessions to from the first day, I hadn’t been in close to 8 months, my mate started working ridiculous hours and I started to loose interest in going by myself, I didn’t feel I was getting anywhere and I wasn’t enjoying it at all. I continued to pay for my membership as I had the thought process that I would go back but didn’t have the motivation or will to go back. We were struggling for motivation early last year also and there was a new gym opening up near us so we thought we would sign up, it’d be a fresh start and new motivation. The newfound motivation lasted a couple of months, and then we just started making excuses for us to not go. The visits to gym got less and less each week; it then got to the stage where we weren’t bothering at all. This break lasted about 8 months.
So for my mate to come up to me and say he was doing a yor health 8-week challenge I was a little shocked. My first thought and response to him was no thanks I’m right. But after a little convincing from him and also a little thought on my behalf I thought it’d be a good thing to give it a go.
The first week was definitely a bit of a struggle, from the change of foods to the exercising at the gym it was pretty full on! I was so sore after every work out; muscle groups would be sore for many days after. I found it challenging to eat so healthy straight away. My job has be based out on the roads, I’m rarely in the office so I found it very challenging at the start, was stressing out how id go about heating my food up or creating something the night before that would be eatable and also met the nutrition values of the guidelines set. Dealing with schools played in my favor, pretty much every school has a microwave so most days I was able to heat up some food that I prepped the night before. The challengers of the food prepping and eating got a lot easier as I got further into the challenge, from cutting up extra veggies to add to that nights dinner and then putting them aside in a container and also cooking the meat up at the same time as dinner. I wasn’t keen to meal prep for a whole week I felt the meals wouldn’t taste as good such as the meats drying out during the time in the fridge.
As if the challenge wasn’t hard enough, I then got sick in the second week, has a sore throat, high temperature completely lost all appetite for food and my will and motivation for gym. That’s where having a training partner is good cause without him I probably wouldn’t have gone a couple of days and just sat at home feeling sorry for myself. I managed to get through the tough week without missing a day and I think that’s the moment when I knew I was ready for this challenge and was really going to give it my all.
Gym became a lifestyle straight away, the first 4 weeks we trained 6 days a week, but in the last 4 we wanted to really do well and started going 7 days a week. Was hard to stay motivated but it was only for a few weeks, short term pain long term gain I used to tell myself, I continued to push myself everyday to try and get the best out of myself and get the best results.
The yor health supplements where amazing, the first day I tried the green shake I wasn’t so sure but by the end of the challenge I’m set in a routine and I wake up every morning looking forward to drinking that shake, even after the challenge Ill be buying the products to make the green shake. From the vitamin tablets to the digest ones also, I never thought I could have ever felt so good on the inside, I have never felt so healthy. Enough energy to carry me through the day and no down times at all, even at gym time I found I had plenty of energy to get me though the demanding workouts.
The challenge has changed my life massively, my outlook towards everything has changed. I respect my body a whole lot more and take a lot more notice of the types of food I’m putting into it, its not all junk food from now on, even going to a restaurant, it might not be all healthy but I know what to look for on the menus and can always ask for the things I don’t want to be taken out. Even going to the shops and buying meats and veggies, I look at what I’m buying where it’s come from and the nutrient values such as protein fats and carbs. I’m doing things I never thought I would. Snacks after dinner or during the day will become a lot less; they will become a protein bar or a protein shake instead. I never would have thought that 8 weeks ago I would be where I am with my health and body and my knowledge that iv learnt along the way, iv had many people come up to me and ask me about it all and I’m finding myself helping them out with the tips and tricks iv learnt over the 8 week journey, it feels awesome that people are noticing my differences and also its amazing knowing I’m helping others with the information I’ve learnt. Now that the challenge is over it’s all up to me now, time to use the tools and knowledge IV learnt and put it to everyday use for the rest of my life.
