When your age is against you?
The past 8 weeks have been a welcome challenge event to further advance my journey to better health. Given that prior to starting this challenge, I had already lost more than 12 kgs over a 9 month period, I had a comfortable mindset that this should be just a continuation of my changed eating habits and that my weight loss goal would be very achievable?
How wrong could I be? From the outset all was well and the weight loss albeit slow and steady was pleasing. The past three weeks were quite stressful as the weight loss stalled and caused me to stress. While not 100% happy with the final weight result, I know it is just a point of achievement in my journey and I have plenty of opportunity and tools to improve as I continue to improve.
PT Quoc took a different approach towards assisting me towards better health outcomes. He assessed me for mobility, posture and strength and from this advised and worked with me on a whole new set of exercises to manage and perfect to help with flexibility and core strength. These were to be completed in addition to my 4 times a week HIIT sessions which were the main stay of my training regime. Core and flexibility sessions could be done at home which was a bonus.
Yes, I have achieved weight loss and while not as great as I wanted I acknowledge there is progress in the right direction. I know also that my body shape has changed as my clothes fit better and I feel more comfortable.
A most remarkable achievement though is the fact that I am now a lot more flexible in my shoulders and upper torso region. Previously I could not control a weighted bar behind my head and in fact could only hold it against my neck. Coach Quoc was clearly not happy about this and set about measuring my stature and mobility. He admits I am his oldest client which brings different challenges but my early successes particularly with improved flexibility brings us both pleasure.
I feel really good that now I can do weighted squats with the bar well away from the back of my neck and feel quite comfortable doing so and continue to improve each week.
My training partner is my youngest daughter who has her own health challenges. We motivate and challenge each other and we are both grateful to have Quoc as our PT. He is insightful, motivating and leads by example so inspires us to be the best we can.
